CTEC Information

California Tax School has been approved by CTEC to offer Course 3055-QE-1260, Introduction to Tax Laws, which provides 45 hours of federal credit and 15 hours of state credit towards the qualifying education requirement imposed by the State of California.  A listing of additional requirements to register as a tax preparer may be obtained by contacting CTEC at P.O. IRS Information

This 60-hour beginner course is primarily for STATE certification, but it also serves as preparation for the IRS competency exam.  The federal section of this course includes many test questions which may appear on the 2½-hour IRS test that should be taken after passing this entry-level California course.

Prerequisites

Before participating in this program, you MUST:
   be at least 18 years of age;
   not have a felony conviction in the past 10 years;
   be a legal U.S. resident with a social security number;
   be in full compliance with your federal income tax obligations.

IRS Publication 17 (textbook for federal section of the exam)
Supplement Q (textbook for state section of the exam)

Passing Score

The open-book exam consists of 500 questions (multiple-choice and true-false) which are directly related to the assigned reading materials.  A minimum score of 70% (350 correct answers) is required for successful course completion. 

Electronic CTEC Reporting

Once it is determined that a student has scored 70% or higher on the final exam, that student’s file is immediately forwarded to the course administrator who accesses the CTEC database, creates an education record, and credits that successful student with 45 federal hours and 15 state hours.

Certificate of Completion

After successfully completing the course, students will receive two copies of their certificate of completion: a digital copy which will be delivered by email, and a hard copy which will be mailed to the address provided on the Student Answer Form.
